Frances Tipton Hunter
Artist Bio:
Frances Tipton Hunter (1896–1957) was born in Howard, Pennsylvania, and was raised by her grandmother and extended family after her mother’s early death. She studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts (now Moore College of Art) and became well known for her charming illustrations of children, widely used on calendars, in books, and in advertising. She created artwork for companies such as Ralston Purina and Lambert Pharmacal (Listerine), and illustrated the 1923 booklet The Children’s Party Book by Marion Jane Parker, which features ten full-page color plates.
Paper dolls by Frances Tipton Hunter appeared in Woman’s Home Companion in the 1920s, where she also contributed cover art, along with covers for other major magazines. Her only standalone book of paper dolls was published by Whitman in 1943. Frances Tipton Hunter was later featured in Paperdoll Review Issue 21 (Fall 2000), underscoring her lasting importance to paper doll collectors.
