Margaret and Florence Hoopes

Artist Bio:

Sisters Margaret and Florence Hoopes were born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and lived in Philadelphia most of their lives. Margaret was born on July 23, 1893, and died in 1956; Florence was born on October 5, 1895, and died in 1984. Their father was a photographer in Philadelphia, and the Hoopes family had roots in the area dating back to 1683.

In 1926 Margaret and Florence illustrated a series of Sunshine Cut-Outs paper doll sets for Stoll and Edwards Co. Inc. of New York City. The series titles are Vacation, Sports, and Every Day, printed as 10" x 15¼" sheets and signed "M. and F. Hoopes.

In 1934 the sisters drew Paper Doll Family for the Saalfield Publishing Co., an ingenious book featuring a paper doll family and their house, with rooms, opening doors, closets for clothes, beds that fit the dolls, and even a basket for the cat. The concept was inspired by the paper doll house books they created in their own childhood.

Beginning in 1934 they also illustrated school readers for Ginn and Co., then for Silver Burdett in 1935, and from 1936 onward they had a long association with Row, Peterson & Co., illustrating the Alice and Jerry Readers (including the first four grade-school readers and many later revisions). Another known paper doll by the Hoopes sisters is Paper Doll Fun from the January 1938 issue of Child Life magazine.
