Charlotte Whatley
Artist Bio:
Charlotte Whatley is a paper doll artist, historic costume consultant, certified leathersmith, artwear designer, art instructor, courtroom artist and teddy bear creator whose wide-ranging talents make her a true Renaissance woman. Since 1980 she has explored a remarkable variety of creative enterprises with great success, bringing superb draftsmanship, historical knowledge and an infectious enthusiasm to all of her work.
Born in the Appalachian region of western Pennsylvania, Charlotte now lives with her husband in rural southern Iowa. Her artistry has reached far beyond her home studio and is represented in such collections as the Bethnal Green Toy Collection of the V&A Museum in London, Texas Tech University Museum, and the Denver Art Museum.
Her professional career began early, when a caricature of Beatle Ringo Starr, drawn when she was only 15 years old, was published in 16 Magazine. In 1982 she rediscovered paper dolls and began self-publishing the exquisitely rendered, realistic yet stylized celebrity paper dolls for which she became so well known. Charlotte Whatley was the featured artist in OPDAG News Issue 13 (1987).
In addition to her self-published, fine art quality paper dolls, Charlotte's work has appeared in magazines and at conventions, as well as in commercially published titles for Hobby House Press, Dover Publications and Paper Studio Press. Her paper dolls are admired for their beauty, artistry and historical richness.
